Therapeutic ultrasound
This is a relatively low intensity technique that uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to speed healing in injured joint or muscle tissue.
Therapeutic ultrasound may have two types of benefit:
Thermal effects involve energy absorbed from the sound waves heating the tissue which speeds healing and reduces chronic inflammation
Cavitational effects result from the vibration of the tissue, causing microscopic air bubbles to form - this physical stimulation appears to enhance the cell repair effects of the inflammatory response
Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT)
This is a combination of skilled hand movements by the chiropractor to mobilise or manipulate soft tissues and joints for the purpose of:
Modulating pain
Increasing joint range motion (ROM)
Reducing or eliminating soft tissue swelling, inflammation or restriction
Inducing relaxation
Improving contractile and non contractile tissue extensibility
Improving pulmonary function
There are a variety of techniques, most of which are accompanied by an audible “popping” sound.
Rehabilitation exercises
Once the primary goal of pain relief is achieved, all patients will be given an exercise regime specific to their individual case to prevent a relapse and to maintain flexibility and stability throughout the body systems.
Trigger point therapy
Trigger points are described as hyperirritable spots in skeletal muscle that are associated with palpable nodules in taut bands of muscle fibers.
Trigger point researchers believe that palpable nodules are small contraction knots, and a common cause of pain.
Compression of a trigger point may elicit local tenderness, referred pain, or local twitch response. Relieving these points can settle referral pain patterns and bring muscles back to their natural state.
